Spin Magnetic Quantum #
Hi! For spin magnetic quantum numbers, do we just assign values of -1/2 and +1/2 arbitrarily, or is there a way to determine whether an electron has a CCW spin versus a CW spin? If so, what type of information would we need to be provided? Also, are these values correlated to the other quantum numbers at all?

Hi,
The orbitals are first filled up with electrons facing upwards so(+1/2) and then once each orbital is filled you fill it with an electron facing downwards(-1/2) for the rest.

Like Omar said, orbitals fill with a positive spin electron first (+1/2), then with a negative spin electron (-1/2). These spin numbers build on the other quantum numbers to reflect how two electrons in the same orbital must have different spins, supporting the Pauli Exclusion Principle.

The spin magnetic quantum number is another quantum number that further describes the behavior of an electron. This quantum number, though, is not inherently related with n, l, or ml. The aforementioned quantum numbers are dependent on one another (for their ranges and such), but the fourth quantum number will always only be +(1/2) or -(1/2). So, there is a relation in that it helps further specify the electron but it is not affected by the other three quantum numbers. Instead, the fourth quantum number is decided upon by what Omar has already stated.

Using Hund's Rule, one electron will occupy each orbital initially, which means that this is spin up or +1/2. Then, after all orbitals have at least one spin up electron, a spin down electron (-1/2) will then occupy the orbital.

This quantum number depends on if the orbital in question is filled or not. The first electron in the orbital will be a positive spin (+1/2) and the second will be negative (-1/2). Remember that until all of the orbitals in the subshell have at least one electron, the second electron cannot be added to fill an orbital (Hund's rule). The orbital will be more stable this way.

You first fill each orbital with an upwards arrow which correlates to a upwards spin (+1/2) and then you go back and add the downward arrow which correlates to a downward spin (-1/2).

+1/2 indicates that the electron is spin up, and -1/2 indicates that the electron is spin down.

Is it always that the rule is for the first electron in the orbital to be spinning up and then the second one that comes to be spinning down?
