clarification on vocabulary

clarification on vocabulary
is there a difference between subshells and orbitals? so far i've been thinking of it as n is the energy level, l is the subshell, and ml is the orbital, but i wasn't sure if thats correct of if theyre interchangeable.

There are orbitals within a subshell. For example, in the 4p subshell, there are three orbitals. I don't think they're interchangeable since a subshell is a group of orbitals, but an orbital is NOT a group of subshells.

Yes, there is a difference. As you have stated yourself, subshells are l while orbitals are ml. This means that there are orbitals within subshells and the two terms cannot be used interchangeably.

The various quantum numbers are not interchangeable.
From my lecture notes, I have this.
n = shell (determines E and size)
l = angular momentum / subshell (describes shape)
ml = orbital (labels different orbitals of a subshell)
I'm not 100% sure though. I do know that "The Organic Chemistry Tutor" has some great videos on this to clarify (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnLcJH- ... istryTutor).

Subshells and orbitals are different. N is the energy level, l are subshells, and ml are orbitals. The angular momentum number l refers to subshells that describe the shape of the orbital. The magnetic quantum number ml refers to the orientation.

Hello! Yes, there is a difference between subshells and orbitals. You can think of it as subshells being essentially "bigger" than the orbitals. By this I mean shells are a collection of subshells, and subshells are a collection of orbitals.

I think orbitals are within subshells. If I recall correctly, the subshells are like s, d, p, and f, while the orbitals are the different types of organizations of electron probabilities within those (such as px, py, pz).

Hi. From my understanding n is the energy level, also known as the shell. Subshells are then what we refer to as s, p, d, and f which indicate the shape of the orbital. Then the orbitals are the smaller components of the subshell, for example there are 3 orbits in the p subshell: Px, Py, Pz. Each orbital can hold 2 electrons.
