Focus 2A Electron Configuration

Postby Richa Thakre 1E » Wed Nov 13, 2024 11:15 pm

I keep getting the ion configuration for Te2- wrong. My thoughts are that the configuration should be[Kr]4d10 5s2 5p2, but the answer key is saying that the answer is [Xe]. Could someone please help me out here?

Te2- means you are adding 2 electrons onto the ground state configuration of Te, which is [Kr]4d105s25p4. By adding 2 electrons, you get to [Kr]4d105s25p6, which reaches the noble gas Xe. Hence, you could just write it as Xe. Your answer makes sense for Te2+, where you take away 2 electrons.
