Ga3+ electron configuration

Postby Hannah Mann 2K » Fri Nov 10, 2023 5:48 pm

Why is Ga3+ electron configuration [Ar]3d^10 and not [Ar]4s^23d^10?

Is this because it is an ion, and how are you supposed to know it is not the second configuration?

hi, this is because the 3+ means it loses electrons and so the 3d includes the 4s automatically. I could be wrong but thats why I think its [Ar]3d^10.

Hi,

The electron configuration for Ga should be [Ar] 4s2 3d10 4p1 so the configuration for Ga3+ is [Ar] 3d10 because the 3+ indicates that it has lost 3 electrons. Electrons from the lower energy orbitals are going to be lost first, which is why we take the 3 electrons from 4s2 and 4p1, leaving the remaining electrons in 3d10 (the higher energy orbital).
