electron configuration for silver

Postby Araceli 3H » Tue Nov 14, 2023 7:39 pm

When writing the ground-state electron configuration for silver (Ag) it is [Kr]4d^105s^1, why does it begin with d-block and why is there only 1 s?

Hello, Silver (Ag) is more stable and has a lower energy when the 4d orbital is filled, so one electron is placed there, rather than in the 5s orbital. It would be less stable as [Kr]4d9 5s2, that is why 1 electron from 5s2 jumps to the 4d orbital.

This electron configuration begins with the d-block because after the electron configuration of Krypton, the 4d energy level is the lowest energy. One electron moves from the 5s orbital to the 4d orbital because d-orbitals would rather be completely full to achieve a lower energy level.
