Question on Chapter 3, Question 19?

Hello all,

Could someone please explain 3.19 part e

It asks to give the "ground state electron configuration and number of unpaired electrons for Ni+2"

The answer I got was 3d6 4s2 with no unpaired electrons but the answer the text gave was "3d8 and 2 unpaired electrons".

part e)
First take into consideration the actual electron configuration of Ni.
When finding out the configuration take into account that the d subshell acts as a lower charge so should be in front of the configuration. So naturally, Ni configuration is
[Ar]3d84s2
it is 3d8 because if you count from scandium to nickel you get 8 electrons rather than 6.
Now incorporating the 2+ ion, you are able to take away two electrons from the equation, respectively the electron on the outer shell, thus 4s2
Now the electron configuration for Ni2+ = [Ar]3d8

Hello,

I have the same question as well. But what seems confusing me is not how the configuration of electrons of Ni2+ should look like. What I don't understand is that why there are still two unpaired electrons? In [Ar]3d8, aren't there even number of electrons? I think every two electrons should be in pair. Odd number of electrons are definitely not all paired.

That's why I get confused. Can somebody help me out?
