copper anion/cation e configuration

Postby Madeline Fox 2B » Sat Dec 03, 2016 8:19 pm

When writing out the e- configuration anions/cations of exceptions like copper (Cu+), would it be 3d^5 or 3d^34s^2?

The electron configuration of Cu+ is actually [Ar] 3d10. We remove electrons from the 4s orbital before the 3d orbital, because the 4s orbital is actually slightly higher than 3d when filled.
