Electron configuration for Copper and and Chromium

Postby hojae_lee_1C » Wed Jul 05, 2017 9:51 am

Why does the electron configuration for Copper and Chromium seem to not obey the rules (i.e. why isn't the electron configuration for Copper isn't [Ar] 4s^2 3d^9 and Chromium isn't [Ar] 4s^2 3d^4? ) Thanks!

As I discussed in class today chromium is [Ar] 3d5 4s1 and copper is [Ar] 3d10 4s1 as the symmetric charge distribution with the half-filled d5 and filled d10 is slightly more stable.
