Electron Ground Configuration 3.21

Postby 104785906 » Tue Jul 18, 2017 11:36 pm

B) In2+, I am confused as to why its e- configuration is [Kr] 4d105s2 rather than [Kr] 4d105s1. Since this cation lost two electrons, isn't one taken from the p orbital and the other from the s orbital?

D) Ag+, its correct configuration is [Kr] 4d10, but 4d10 would be as if the atom gained an e- rather than lost one, shouldn't it be [Kr] 4d8?

Does this all have to do with hybridization, I've read up on it, but I'm overthinking, the subject isn't clear to me.
Thanks !

Hey,

You are on the right track in your thinking, but I think you may have read the question wrong. I have attached the question below. It is asking In+ rather than 2+. That is where you got a different answer. I'll walk through them

-Needs 49 e- to obtain In
-Previous noble gas: Kr
-Has a +1 charge meaning one e- is taken away from it, so you remove the p Orbital's one e-

As for Ag+...

-Needs 47 e- to obtain Ag+
-Previous noble gas: Kr
-Has +1 charge meaning one e- is taken away from it, so you remove the s Orbital's one e-
