Valence electrons

Why is the number of valence electrons for silver 11 and not 1 as 5 is the outermost shell?

N: 1s2,2s2,2p6,3s2,3p6,3d10,4s2,4p6,4d10,5s1

Silver has one valence electron. The rule for the d-block is that there are [group number] - 10 = a valence electrons

This is also because silver is one of the special exceptions to the configuration rule where one electron from the s subshell will go to the d subshell in order to have a full d shell

Just remember that alot of the elements in the d-block will take an electron from their s orbital to fill the d orbital to make it half way full or all the way full in order to reach a more stable state. That is why Silver has 1 valence electron as it takes an electron from is s orbital to fill its d orbital meaning its most outermost shell is the s orbital which has 1 electron.
