### Unpaired Electrons

How do you determine the number of unpaired electrons from looking at the ground state configuration? Thanks!

Draw out their orbitals by determining which subshell they are in. All the spots with only 1 "arrow" or electron in them is an unpaired electron.

When you are adding your electrons to their orbitals, remember to put an electron in each orbital before you fill your orbitals.

Will we only be asked to give the number of unpaired electrons for ground state configurations?

Write down the electron configuration and then draw the orbitals to get a visual of the unpaired electrons. The orbitals with only one arrow are unpaired.

FInd the elctron configuration first then draw the valence orbitals so you can look for the unpaired electrons.

Electrons fill the orbital sub-shells singly first and then become paired after a single electron is present in each sub-shell of the orbital
