Ground State Configuration

Ground State Configuration

Fe^2+
I thought the ground state would be [Ar]3d^4 4s^2 because of its 2+ state?

Practice Problem

What is the full electron configuration for carbon in the ground state? How many unpaired electrons?
For the ground state would it be 1s^2 2s^2 2p^2 ?
And the for unpaired electrons are there 4?

Yes, the electron configuration for Fe 2+ would be 3d^4 4s^2 because there are two fewer electrons in an Fe 2+ ion than there are in a regular Fe atom.

And yes, ground state carbon is 1s^2 2s^2 2p^2 because there are six total electrons, two in each subshell. There would only be two unpaired electrons however because the electrons in 1s^2 and 2s^2 are paired. The two electrons in the p orbital would not be paired.

Is there a difference between the electron configuration and the ground state configuration? Is ground state config. just another term for electorn config.?
