Can someone explain the reasoning behind the different spacing between each orbital in Aufbau Principle diagrams? More specifically, why are the s-orbitals closer than the p-orbitals, and so on? Also, why is 1s farther than 2s in the diagrams? Any help is appreciated!!
I think it has to do with energy difference. Next to the Aufbau diagram, theres a y-axis labeled as Energy, energy increases as it goes up. There is a bigger gap between the s orbital than the p orbital because it requires more energy for electron to move.
The spacing between orbitals decreases for the same reason that the space between energy levels (n = 1 and n = 2, for instance) decreases, and for the same reason that in a Lyman or Balmer series, the distance between spectral lines decreases. That distance decreases (I think) because of the relationship between frequency and energy level, and as the energy levels, possessing more energy and thus higher frequencies, become compressed.
