i would usually expect it to be [Kr] $5s^{2}4d^{8}$ but I looked this up online and it said that it is [Kr] $4d^{10}$ beacause it is most stable. I remember professor Lavelle mentioning something similiar but when it would be $d^{4} or d^{^{9}}$ but is $d^{8}$
another exception or is the exception just palladium

The exception is probably just palladium. Because exceptions to exceptions become more prominent down the periods, Dr. Lavelle wants us to focus on just up to the first row of transition metals where the exceptions are regular. This means that we are not expected to know the exceptions to exceptions like palladium.

^Agreed. I believe Professor Lavelle stated we would only need to know electron configurations (and the exceptions) up to the 4th row orbital level on the periodic table.
