Slight Confusion

Postby Michelle Fu 1H » Fri Oct 19, 2018 3:39 pm

So I know in lecture Mr. Lavelle went over the axis's such as px, py, pz which he demonstrated with the p orbital. Do these "directions" only apply to p orbitals, or does it also apply to the d orbital too? How would that work?

I am pretty sure it is also dx dy dz but I am not sure about the second part of your question.

For the d orbritasl, the five configurations are dxy, dxz, dyz, dx^2y^2, and dz^2

I believe we will not need to use the d-orbital on the test for this week. So I would just understand that there are 5 d orbitals and 3 p orbitals.
