Electron configuration for elements > Z = 56

Postby ChathuriGunasekera1D » Mon Oct 22, 2018 4:01 pm

Hi! Do we need to include the f orbital when finding the electron configuration of Tungsten (z=74) for example? Would it be

[Xe] 4f14 5d4 6s2 or [Xe] 6s2 5d4

Also if it is the first one, in what order should the orbitals be listed? Thank you!

I am unsure to your question (I assume you would include the f orbitals), but I wanted to make sure that all we need to know for electron configurations are the s-block, p-block, and 1st row of d-block.

Yeah I think you're right I was going through lecture notes and he mentioned that today. Thank you!

It would be the first one, and it goes f, d,s,p. You don't need to know that though because you only need to know up to the first d-block.
