3.5a on 6th Edition

Hey y'all!

I was wondering as to why 3.5a Cu+ is [Ar]3d^10. Doesn't the + mean that the atom is losing electrons?

Hi! So this is the one electron configuration that I got right out of all 4 parts. As you might recall from lecture, copper (Cu) is one of the exceptions that Dr. Lavelle talked about. So the electron configuration of just Cu is [Ar]3d^104s^1. However the question is asking for the electron configuration for the ion Cu+, you are correct that the plus sign indicated the element has lost an electron. Therefore you see the electron configuration for Cu+as [Ar]3d^10 because the electron was removed from the s-orbital. Hope this helps!
