Filling of Orbitals

Since the 4s orbital is filled before the 3d orbital, does this same idea apply to the 5s orbital being filled before the 4d orbital? And how does the filling of electron work with the addition of the f orbital?

The same idea does apply to the 5s orbital, and it is filled before 4d. However, there is no 4f electron configuration for period five, as 4f1 begins after lanthanum. I don't think we need to know the specific patterns of period 5, like why it is 4d4 5s1 instead of 4d3 5s2, just be able to count the number of electrons in d across the periodic table.

Electrons are filled in this order: 1s 2s 2p 3s 3p 4s 3d 4p 5s 4d 5p 6s 4f 5d 6p 7s 5f 6d 7p. This order can be figured out looking at the periodic table.

So we just have to follow the periodic table in numerical order? That's not what I remembered - or did I hear something wrong?
