Au question

Postby Megan_Ervin_1F » Fri Nov 02, 2018 10:03 pm

for Au, why is an electron more likely to be removed from the s orbital than the p orbital? I understand that the half full d orbital is more stable but why remove the electron from the s orbital?

The 6s electron is still the most energized in the atom, and it is furthest away from the nucleus, being the only n=6 state electron. So, it will be easiest to separate from the atom altogether.
