Electron configuration for Ag

Postby Riya Sood 4G » Sat Oct 19, 2019 5:51 pm

Is this the correct electron configuration for Ag (Silver):

1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d10 4s2 4p6 4d10 5s1

Does the 5s1 go last or the 4d10?

When we looked at the Scandium example, we saw that the right way to write the electron configuration was [Ar]3d14s2 because for multi-electron atoms after atomic number 20 the 4s state is higher in energy than 3d. Period 5 shows this same trend where after 2 electrons have occupied the 5s state the 4d state is lower in energy than the 5s state. Thus, for Ag the 5s1 would come after 4d10.
