Electron Configuration Exceptions

Postby Tracey Tran 3I » Sun Oct 20, 2019 3:12 pm

What are the exceptions to electron configuration, and why do those exceptions exist?

the 2 exceptions we need to know for electrong configurations are:
Chromium, Cr: [Ar]3d^54s^1 and Copper, Cu: [Ar] 3d^104s^1
but I also need some clarification on why these exceptions exist.

these exceptions exist because a half-full or completely full d sub-level is more stable than the partially full one.

What is the partial full one you are referring to in these exceptions?

Can you break this down a bit further I'm having trouble understanding what you meant?

I think what is meant by the partially full shell is referring to the d sub-shell. A full or half full d shell is more stable than a partially filled d shell.
