Electron configuration for Cerium

Postby Diana_Diep2I » Wed Oct 23, 2019 1:28 pm

Why is the electron configuration for Cerium [Xe]4f15d16s2? Isn't it the second element in the f block?

Cerium is actually the first element in the Lanthanoid f-block, giving it the configuration: [Xe] 4f1 5d1 6s2. Lanthanum is part of the d-block with a configuration of [Xe] 5d1 6s2.

The second element in the f-block is Praseodymium
