Valence Shell Configuration

For homework question 1E.25, it asks for the valence shell configuration of metals. So for example, the Group 5 transition metals are (n-1)d^3ns^2. Can someone please explain what these numbers/orbitals mean in the context of the problem?

This question is asking about the electron configuration in the valence shell, which is the last shell. Since this problem is asking about the Group 5 transition metals, the valence shell must be (n-1)d^3 because transition metals in Group 5 have an exponent of 3, but it is also (n-1) because the fourth row of the periodic table is 3d for transitions. In addition, there is a ns^2 because there is the s subshell that occurs before the transition row, but when we write out the electron configuration, we write the d subshell before the s subshell. We have to include the s subshell because the question is asking about the valence shell, so we must include everything in the entire row.
