Electron Configurations (3d-orbital and 4s-orbital)

Postby Andrea_1H » Sun Oct 27, 2019 8:22 pm

Is there a specific reason we fill the 4s-orbital before the 3d-orbital when doing the electron configurations? And does that mean when we’re taking electrons away, we take them from 4s first?

I think it is because the 3d orbitals have more energy to them so we fill the 4s orbitals first

A half-full or completely full d sub-shell is more stable than a full 4s orbital. "Removing" the electron from the s sub-shell and placing it in the d sub-shell is actually when an electron becomes excited with more energy so it can move up a level.
