Give the notation for the valence shell configuration (including the outermost d-electrons) of (a) the alkali metals; (b) Group 15 elements (c) Group 5 transition metals (d) the "coinage" metals (Cu, Ag, Au).

a) Alkali metals all have one electron in their outer shell (which is why they're so reactive) and so its outer shell can be represented as ns1.
b) group 15 elements have 3 electrons in their outermost p orbital and a full s orbital. So then the outer shell can be represented by ns2 np3
c) group 5 transition metals have 5 electrons in the d subshell. remember to put it before the s orbital of the shell above as the d subshell has a lower energy than it. the outer shell (including the d subshell from below it) can be represented then as (n-1)d5ns2
d) coinage metals have a full d subshell and are represented as (n-1)d10ns1
