### Hw problem 2A.13

Can someone show step by step how to do this problem?
2A.13 For each of the following ground-state atoms, predict the
type of orbital (1s, 2p, 3d, 4f, etc.) from which an electron will need
to be removed to form the 1 1 ions: (a) Zn; (b) Cl; (c) Al; (d) Cu

So first you would write the electron configuration of the atoms and then by looking at it, you would see which one is the last orbital in what you wrote and the electron in that orbital would be the one you need to remove. So for Zn, which is [Ar]3d104s2, the electron you would be removing is located in the 4s orbital.

The way that I would approach this problem is by first writing out the ground state electron configurations. The electron would be removed from the last orbital and this is easier to see when you have the configuration written out.

Make sure to remove the electrons from the highest energy orbital. For example Zn: [Ar] 3d^10 4s^2, the electrons would be removed from the 4s orbital since it is the highest energy orbital.

First, you will have to write out the electron configurations for each of the elements in the question, then remove electrons from the highest energy orbital/outermost layer. For example, you will see that Zn has the highest energy orbital 4s^2, which is the outermost layer. You would remove electrons from here for each element. Hope this helps!
