Electron config for copper

Can someone please explain to me why the electron configuration 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d10 4s1 is copper and not potassium?

The 3d10 and 4s1 implies that the 4s shell gave one electron to the 3d shell in order to make it more stable. 3d9 and 4s2 -> 3d10 and 4s1 is an exception made by copper.

Also the 4s shell is written before the 3d because it has higher energy. Reading it off the periodic table can be confusing because it goes from 4s->3d.

When you add up all the electrons in 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3d10 4s1 you get (2+2+6+2+10+1) = 29, the atomic number for Cu and the amount of electrons it has.

For potassium, it would just be omitting the 3d10
