When writing out electron configurations for elements, does the d orbital come before or after the s orbital?
For example, is the electron configuration of Iodine [Kr]5s24d105p5 or is it [Kr]4d105s25p5?
In high school chemistry, I was taught to write the s orbital first, but the textbook answer key was giving the configurations with the d orbital first increasing in terms of n. Which is the correct way?

Re: Electron configuration
I wrote the s orbital first in high school too. However, I think we are expected to write the d orbital first because it has a lower energy than s.

Re: Electron configuration
Yeah, I think Lavelle wants us to write the d-orbitals first in this course, going off of energy level. I think he mentioned it in Monday's lecture? Still a little confused on why though, because we also wrote the s-orbitals first in chem.

Re: Electron configuration
People sometimes write s first to show the pattern on the p-table and d first to show the energy level
