Palladium Electron Configuration

Hi,

I am confused as to why the electron configuration for Pd is [Kr] 4d^10. I thought that its electron configuration should be [Kr] 4d^8 5s^2. For example, Ni, the element right above Pd, has an electron configuration of [Ar] 3d^8 4s^2, so I'm wondering why Pd doesn't follow the same pattern.

The configuration for Palladium is an exception to the general trend. The reason why it has a full d-orbital is that the atom is in a more stable state when the d-orbital is full as opposed to when it has a full 5s2.

Palladium is more stable if it completes its d-orbital as opposed to filling the s-orbital and leaving 2 empty electrons in the d-orbital.
