Topic 2A excercise 3a
The ground-state electron configuration for S^2- is [AR] right? Since adding two electrons to S, which is [Ne] 3s^2 3p^4, is the electron configuration for Ar?

Yes that is correct! Whenever an element has a negative charge, you add that amount to the electron configuration. Whenever it's positive, you decrease that amount.

Yep! But I believe it is more commonly written as [Ne]3s^2 3p^6. Hope this helps! :)

Kayla and Rich explained it very well, and a method to check if your electron configuration is correct is to compare the number of electrons in your electron configuration with the electrons that your new element (S^(2-) is Ar, which has 18 electrons). So, [Ne] 3s^2 3p^6 has 18 electrons as well because [Ne] has 10 e- and 3s^2 3p^6 is 8 e-. So, you know that that electron configuration is correct.

Ya! also to add to the previous responses different atoms with the same electron configuration are isoelectric or atoms with the same number of electrons are isoelectric. So once you determine the anion had a number of electrons same as Ar you know the configuration is the same.
