Increasing Radius for Electron Transitions

Postby Elaine Steinberg 3H » Fri Oct 15, 2021 5:26 pm

Hi! For textbook problem 1E, I understand that an electron in a lithium atom going from a 1s to a 2p energy state increases the radius as the largest energy level for a lithium atom in the ground state is 2s.
I was wondering whether if an electron went from 1s to 2p for an atom of an element like carbon, would this increase the radius as well because of an increase in the repulsions among the outer electrons in the 2p orbital?

Interesting question.
At the time of excitation yes it would.
Not something I typically cover in class.
