Writing configuration

When we are writing the elctron configurations, does he want us to do it the more specific way like 1s^2 2s^2 2px^2 2py^2 2pz^1 or can we just write it in the more simple form like 1s^2 2s^2 2p^5?

I don't think we have to specify the px, py ,pz...None of the problems on Achieve or in the textbook require us to do so, so I'm pretty sure not. Hope this helps!

I believe he said that either was acceptable in lecture today.

I believe the simplified form is sufficient; however, understanding both forms is probably useful as the more complicated form describes the order in which electrons enter a subshell and reflects both Hund's Rule and the Pauli Exclusion Principle. It will also probably continue to show up in the course.

I believe that Professor Lavelle said that either form is sufficient enough so the simplified form would be alright to use.

From my understanding of what he said during the lecture, I believe you can choose to write it either way.
