when do you use electron configuration x, y, or z?

we usually use the letters x, y, z to refer to the orbitals in the p subshell, like px, py or pz

To go off that response, d orbitals have other dimensions such as xy, yz, zx, x^2-y^2, and z^2 and f orbitals have even more dimensions.

The x, y, and z are used to specify the orbitals with electrons in the p-subshell. Since there are 5 orbitals in the d-subshell, there are more orbitals that you can specify when writing the electron configuration.

But, we will be mainly focusing on the s and p orbitals.

they specify the orbitals specifically within each Subshells, and I believe for writing electron configuration in this class we have to use them within the p and d orbitals.

It refers to orbitals in the p-subshell. X, Y, and Z are the planes that the electrons are most likely to be found at. However, we will never need to write them down when using electron configurations. My TA was saying that Dr. Lavelle was using them to explain electron configurations conceptually.
