Electron Confriguration

Postby Kiana Rogers 1E » Mon Oct 18, 2021 12:02 am

Is there a good way to remember the order of the electron configurations? (1s2, 2s2, 2p6, etc.)

For me I like to focus on remembering that its going to go 1,2, 3, 4... for the number in front of the orbital. and then they get more complex as they go because electrons like to fill s, p, d, f in that order.

I go in order of s, p, d, and f. I know that the number before the orbital has to be in order. For example for an atom like Chromium it's 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d5 4s1. If you can see the electron configuration, we need to put the energy level in order. That's why 3d5 is before 4s even though when looking at the periodic table, it wouldn't make sense.

Hi!
I think that the easiest way might just be to look at the periodic table and try to match each section to their respective orbital, s, p, d, f. I usually just remember which orbital on the table is where and then assign numbers to it.

I always use the image that I attached- I memorized and do it off of memory now but it helps to draw it out when you are starting to try to memorize it.
