1.E.1 Textbook Question

Postby Ivy Nguyen 3I » Tue Oct 19, 2021 12:44 am

Which of the following increase when an electron in a lithium atom undergoes a transition from the 1s-orbital to a 2p-orbital? (a) Energy of the electron. (b) Value of n. (c) Value of l. (d) Radius of the atom. Which answers would be different for a hydrogen atom and in what way would they be different?

I got that all of them increase but I was a bit confused on the second question: Which answers would be different for a hydrogen atom and in what way would they be different?

Thank you!

HI Ivy!

The answer is actually that none of the answers are different! If you checked what you answered for Textbook Question 1.D.1, you should see that you said that energy, the value of n, l, and the radius would increase, just like what you answered for 1.E.1.

Hopes this helps :)

Hello,
As the energy level increases, all of the following will increase just like in the example with Hydrogen.

All the energies increase, and it will be the same for H atom. Hope that helps!
