Stern-Gerlach Experiment

Postby Ashley Wilson 2L » Fri Oct 22, 2021 11:21 am

In the lecture, Dr. Lavelle discussed the Stern-Gerlach experiment to explain how we discovered that electrons in the same orbital must have opposite spins. Can someone please describe the procedure of this experiment and how it relates to the spin magnetic quantum number?

The beam of silver ions are shot in between two different poles of a magnet. What was observed was a pattern that showed two different charges/distinctions between electrons. It was thus reasoned that these electrons must have had some property to them that allowed them to do this, and thus they assigned spin to them.
