Cerium

I know that Professor Lavelle said not to worry too much about f-orbitals, but I was wondering why Cerium's electron configuration is [Xe]4f1 5d1 6s2 instead of [Xe] 4f2 6s2?

Hello! Like chromium and copper, the electron config of cerium is an exception to Madelung's rule, which doesn't apply very well to atoms with high atomic numbers (https://www.thoughtco.com/definition-of ... ule-605325). Hope that's helpful!

Could someone go into more depth about why these exceptions exist in nature?
