atomic radius

Postby 805601399 » Mon Oct 25, 2021 12:09 am

Since atomic radius decreases across a period and increases down a group, would francium have the largest atomic radius of all the elements?

Yes, since atomic radius increases down a group and decreases across a period, Francium would have the largest atomic radius.

Yes! this is because atomic radius increases down a group, and decreases along a period.

Yes! Francium would have the largest and helium the smallest!

Yes Francium would have the largest atomic radius. Atomic radius increases going down a group because as more electrons shells are being added, the atomic radius gets larger. Atomic radius decreases going across a period because as more electrons are added in the same electron shell, the attraction between the nucleus and the electrons increases as more protons and electrons are added and this attraction causes the electrons to be pulled closer to the nucleus causing the atomic radius to decrease.

You would be correct! Francium has the largest atomic radius according to our know periodic trends as it is the farthest down and farthest to the left.

Francium, out of all discovered elements, would have the largest atomic radius. Because atomic radius depends on effective nuclear charge and the highest shell of electrons, Francium would have the highest since it is the first element of Row 7. As a result, it has the least amount of protons in the row (lesser effective nuclear charge) and an electron in the n=7 energy level.
