Ionization energy

Postby Shaniya Kerns 4D » Fri Dec 08, 2023 2:46 am

What is the difference between the first and second ionization energy? Why does K+ have a greater ionization energy than Cl-?

1st ionization energy is just how much energy it takes to remove the first electron and the 2nd ionization energy is how much energy is needed to remove a 2nd electron. K+ has a higher ionization energy because it would be harder to take electrons from it than Cl-. This is because K+ has 19 protons and 18 electrons while Cl- has 17 protons and 18 electrons. Even though they both have the same amount of electrons K+ has more protons meaning that the higher positive force than the electrons will pull them in more making it less willing to give up it's electrons.
