Ionization vs disassociation energy

Postby GraceLi_2L » Fri Nov 29, 2024 5:58 pm

How is ionization energy different compared to disassociation energy? I thought they both were about energy required to break a bond?

Ionization energy and dissociation energy are related but refer to different processes. Ionization energy is the energy required to remove an electron from an atom or ion in the gas phase, not involving bonds between atoms. Dissociation energy, on the other hand, is the energy needed to break a bond between two atoms in a molecule and separate them into individual atoms, typically in the gas phase. While both involve breaking interactions, ionization deals with removing electrons, and dissociation focuses on breaking chemical bonds.
