Second Ionization Energy
When do you apply 2nd ionization energy? Like when does it come up and when do you need it versus just knowing first ionization energy order?

Re: Second Ionization Energy
Second ionization energy is only needed when you are trying to remove an additional electron. We don’t apply it when thinking about bonding. We just need to know it’s harder (takes more energy) to remove the second electron compared to the first.

Re: Second Ionization Energy
Hello,
You apply second ionization energy when you are trying to remove the second electron. I believe most problems will say it in the question and mention second ionization energy. More energy is required during the second ionization energy due to electrons being closer to the nucleus why is why there would be 2 electrons. For example the second ionization energy for Na+ would be Na2+ plus an electron.

Second ionization energy is the energy needed to remove the second electron from an ion.

Re: Second Ionization Energy
What is the difference in the first ionization energy and the second and which is more stable?
