Quiz 2 Question 1 Wording

Postby Allison_Eminhizer_3A » Wed Oct 26, 2016 11:33 pm

So it says circle the compound with greater "ionic character"
And my notes have trends for both ionic radii and ionization energy.
which trend does ionic character refer to? or how do i figure that out

Ionic character (and covalent character) refers to the difference in electronegativity. The greater the difference in electronegativity between atoms, the greater ionic character the bonds will be, and the closer the electronegativity is between the two atoms, the more covalent. For example, with NaBr and NaCl, sodium has low electronegativity, and Cl is slightly higher than Br. Therefore, the difference is greater between Na and Cl, and the bond has greater ionic character relative to NaBr. Hope that helps!

Oh i had it all wrong omg thankyou now i remember. so do i have to know the exact values of electronegativity and compare or can i determine which is greater through the trend

I do not believe you would need to know the exact numerical values, just a sense of the trend.

Compounds with ionic character have big differences in electronegativity.
On the other hand, compounds with covalent character have small differences in electronegativity.
