Atomic Radius vs. Ionic Radius

Postby Andy Liao 1B » Sun Oct 29, 2017 2:25 pm

What is the difference between the atomic radius and ionic radius of an element?

Atomic radius is half the distance between centers of neighboring atoms and ionic radius is two ions that are joined by an ionic bond.

The atomic radius is the distance between the atomic nucleus and the outermost stable electron of a neutral atom (which is found by measuring the distance between the nuclei of 2 atoms that are touching, and halving that distance.) The ionic radius of an element is its share of the distance between neighboring ions in an ionic solid. Cations are smaller than their parent atoms, and anions are larger.

Atomic radius is half the distance between two neighboring atoms, and the ionic radius is half the distance between an ionic bond of neighboring atoms.
