Negative Electron Affinity

Postby Rita Dang 3D » Tue Oct 31, 2017 1:05 pm

Does negative electron affinity mean energy must be supplied to push an electron onto an atom?
If so, would more negative electron affinity mean lower electron affinity since it takes more energy for the atom to gain an electron?

Electron affinity is the energy released when an electron is added to a gas phase atom, so when it attaches, energy is is given off. When EA is negative, there is no excess energy to give off and actually more must be provided to attach it, and therefore EA is considered low. High electron affinity would mean that a comparatively large amount of energy is given off upon e- attachment.

Atoms to the left of the noble gases are almost complete and readily accept electrons and therefore have highly positive electron affinity values. So you can think of negative values of the opposite. Atoms w negative values don't want electrons.
