What gives rise to diagonal relationships?

Many chemical properties are related to size of an atom or how many protons/electrons it contains. For two elements diagonal to each other, they differ by one group (vertical column of periodic table) and share similar characteristics.
Size decreases when you move from left to right, and increases when you move from down to up. If we compare Lithium and Magnesium (they are diagonal to each other) we see that size increases since we went down one period but size decreases because we went right one group. This kinda equalizes and we get that lithium and magnesium are very similar in size.
Size is very closely related to how strongly electrons are held (so ionization energy to remove as well) which is also why this leads to similar properties between diagonal elements.
