how can you tell which anion is larger?

O- and S2-

When we compare the O and S as the atoms (before assessing the affects of the negative charge), O and S are in the same group with O atom smaller due to 1 less electron shell (less shielding). Then if we look at the negative charges they acquire and compare, and based solely on this gaining 2 electrons is worse for shrinking the atomic radius (more electrons acquired weakens the nucleus's effective nuclear charge). For both of these reasons O- is smaller than S2-.
