What is a diagonal relationship? How does it arise? What are two examples that illustrate this concept?

Look at 2 elements in the periodic table that are diagonal to each other (touching corners), and see if there are any relationships between them. For example, like we learned in class, the size of atoms increases as we go down the periodic table (due to the number of electron orbitals/shielding) and decreases as we go across the periodic table to the right (due to electrostatic attraction between the nucleus and the electrons.) You can look to look to Be and Na as an example. Be is above and to the right of Na so, according to these periodic trends, it is smaller than Na.
