Diagonal Relationships

Are diagonal neighbor elements as similar to properties of elements in the same group?

I think the most similar elements will be in the same group however metalloids are structured diagonally in the periodic table and share similar properties.

I think elements in the same group will generally be more similar since they have the same number of valence electrons. This similar electron configuration gives them similar chemical and physical properties.
