Arrange S^-2, Cl-1, P-3 in order of increasing ionic radius. The correct order according to the textbook of increasing ionic radius is Cl^1-,S^2-,P^3-. Why is it in that order? My thought process is the same as atomic radius: as you add valence electrons, the ionic radius decreases. Using that process, I would get P^3-,S^2-,Cl^1-.
The order of increasing ionic radius is Cl^1-,S^2-,P^3- because even though they have the same electron configuration, the smaller ions are the ones with the larger atomic number because they have the most positive charge in the nucleus because of the number of protons and so they have the largest pull on the electrons.
From my limited understanding Protons are what you should be mainly concerned about because the protons are what gives a positive charge for the electrons to be attracted to. Therefor the more protons the higher the positive charge and therefor electrons will be closer to the nucleus.
