Atomic Radius

Postby Maggie Doan 1I » Sun Nov 04, 2018 5:08 pm

What is the effect of electrons on the size of the atom?

Atomic radius increases down a group because shells are added with more electrons, so the size of the atom increases. It decreases down a period, though, because the electrons are attracted to the greater number of protons in the nucleus, pulling the electrons in closer.

Electrons are equal to the number of protons. If an element has more protons, then it will have more electrons, causing the element to have more shells and be bigger.

An easy way to memorize how the atomic radius trends are to consider how electrons and protons are attracted to each other.

so it is based off the attraction of the protons and electrons?
